Snacks of Life

Snacks of Life...

Chapter 1

At an under construction airport
Jeddah, Saudi Arabia
guy was squatting on a wooden plank with four wheels fixed under it making it a cart, by putting his weight on the board and moving it with his legs. His tools and nut bolts were placed behind him. There was an electric drill in his hand and he was drilling holes in the floor for the racks to be installed later. That guy was a genius and very hard worker. When other people were doing this same work, while bowing down he invented his own way using one of many carts lying beside the place of work. When other people were tired and used to stay for awhile this guy never stopped and all the time kept doing his work like a machine. It was like he never gets tired. Even sometimes his coworkers had to shout at him. "Saeed, its lunch time already, stop the work". In fact he did get tired but he never lost his courage. He had dreams to make them true and had a family to support, back in his home country Philippines.

Meanwhile there was a German Guy Sagi who kept his eye on Saeed. Sagi was a big white guy, heavily muscular built. He was able to take up the load of four healthy men alone. He was a supervisor at a German Company and was sent to Saudi Arabia for BHS system installation. He always used to see Saeed working hard while passing by from their worksite. He liked as well as needed hard workers for his newly started installation.

Chapter 2

Malekkeg Village, Philippines

A mother was beating her youngest boy. "How many times do I need to tell you that don't go to the river" mom said with anger."It was last mistake, I'll never go there again please leave me now" boy  cried his lungs out." We named you Jesus but you are never serious, what if you drown in the river? " Mom said disappointingly. After awhile mom let the kid go, he always used to go to the Abulug River for swimming. But every time when he goes his mom comes to know this, out of the blue. And a punishment were waiting for him all the time. But this time punishment was harder. Thus when he came running out of his hut he promised himself that he will never go to the river again.

Next day when Jesus was coming back from school passing through the rice fields. He passed beside the river, he controlled himself, but he never knew when he removed his shirt and jumped in the river. He was having a great swim...not every time mom finds out what Jesus did.

Jesus passed his childhood in poverty. He used to eat boiled rice poured on a banana leaf. He went with his mom in other farmer's rice fields for harvesting, and got a little labored rice as wage. He used to ride carabao (buffalo) in the rice fields. He had three older brothers and three sisters. Poverty was common at that place. But still Jesus loved the mountains, river and green fields of his village.

Chapter 3

Jeddah, Saudi Arabia

Sagi somehow arranged for saeed to work for him. Saeed  came together with Ibrahim his friend from Philippines to work for Sagi and he welcomed them.

The day when Saeed came to Saudi Arabia he was confused. Fist time he saw South Asian and Middle East people right in front of him and he thought to himself, "They all seem to look alike, everybody has the same face." And what those guys said was, " All Chinese look the same". Although they didn't know that they aren't Chinese.

However Saeed was thankful that he wasn't alone, Ibrahim and Suriara his kabayan (compatriots) were together with him. But Suraira seemed disturbed, he got home sick. He used to cry whenever he is alone. Then after about a month he packed his bags and returned back home. He said he couldn't take it anymore. Suraira gifted Saeed an internet usb modem before leaving. Which helped Saeed a lot later  to call back home. Saeed was a man of a good heart that's why people cared about him.

On Saeed's first day in Arabia his bosses treated him with khabsa for lunch. It was a rice pilaf with chicken and raisin on it. For Saeed it tasted different but he liked it. Somebody gave him laban, kind of buttermilk which was sour and he didn't really like it. Then company sent him from Jeddah to Rabigh for work in a power plant, together with Ibrahim and Suraira from where Suraira left for home back to Philippines. After working for a few months Saeed and Ibrahim sent back to Jeddah for doing rack work at airport.

Chapter 4

Somewhere in Philippines

An old man was driving a rusty small motorbike. He was wearing dirty cloths and bike was as dirty looking as he himself. Where ever he saw a piece of iron or tin he stops his bike and puts it in a bag hanging on his bike behind him. Front pocket of his shirt was full of money, everyone passes by could see that currency notes. He passed by a few factory workers, "Good morning Boss Dakila" they said.

Dakila was owner of this factory where he made bolts. He wasn't born rich but his hard work made him so. In fact he got two bolt manufacturing factories one in Philippines and one in China. Although he didn't need to work but he remembered his old days. When he started his work by collecting garbage. He cared about garbage and garbage made him what he was. That's why he carried on with his habit even after he owned the factories. Without caring about his status now, he used to take his old bike and round around his factory and collect all the metal pieces, which were left by workers.

Dakila finished his job for today, he stopped his bike at the gates. His bag was full and he was looking happy. A young man came toward him and excused him," Magandang Umaga Boss". Dakila recognized him he was one of his best workers. Good Morning Jesus, how are you doing today. " I'm good, I just needed a little advance." Jesus requested. " Sure I can give you advance" Dakila looked to his front pocket. "But I don't want you to spend all of your money before your salary and you get nothing when month is finished." Dakila walked away smiling. He knew how to treat his workers and where to spend his money very well. Jesus also smiled behind him, it had been long time after high school since he was working for Dakila, and he knew that Dakila don't do favors when it comes to money. But he always enjoyed to bother him asking him something about it.

Chapter 5

A young good looking woman was sitting at the front seat of a taxi beside driver. She was adjusting her makeup. "Why do you wear a lot of makeup." The guy beside her said harshly. "I got married to you because I felt you're beautiful without wearing this tons of makeup." "Mind your own business Jesus and don't look at me if you can't see me wearing makeup." His wife Mariel shouted back.

Jesus faced a lot of hardships in his life but it wasn't over yet. He completed his studies very difficultly by working at the rice fields after school. And after doing many jobs somehow he managed to buy this taxi, he used to drive all day. And at night when he comes back home he and his wife start fighting on small issues almost all the time. They were fighting but still there was love in their hearts which they stopped sharing that time. That's why after sometime they separated to find their own peace. Jesus was looking for peace all of his life but never find it.

Then he met another girl and got married again. Till then h'd a house of his own, his home sweet home. He struggled a lot to built that house, it wasn't complete yet but he loved it. He adopted a puppy to keep in his new home. His father died of cancer because of smoking. Maybe that's why sometimes he used to get very angry on small things. He wasn't like this he never wanted to  be, but he had no control over it. Even a few times he punished his puppy in his anger. But he felt bad when he realized it later. He used to go to church to calm himself and in search of peace. But many times he got distracted of praying, by some girl sitting next to him wearing shorts.

Chapter 6

Taiba, Jeddah

It was really hard to breath, he opened his eyes but couldn't see anything, it was all dark. Even he couldn't see his own hands, he tried to move but couldn't. He was stuck somewhere in the dark, where no body was around. He moved his arms and it hit something hard. He tried to move his arms again but he could hear the sound of his arms hitting some wood only. He tried to touch it, it was some kind of wooden box he was trapped in. He tried to breath, but it'd become really hard. He tried to shout for help but sound wasn't coming out of his throat. He was feeling very thirsty and he was in great misery. Then he heard a sound, " Saeed what happened to you, Saeed move." Somebody was hitting his face. He couldn't breath, he was trying to shout but couldn't say anything. "Grrrrrrrrrrr grrrrrrrrr" only that weird sounds was coming out of his mouth. Few more guys joined the first guy and they took him up. He couldn't see where they were taking him in the dark. He was feeling like they moved him out of some room, and then they put him on some chair. They were keep saying," what happened to you, saeed move." Then someone said put water on him, with that a guy put water on his head and face. Suddenly he woke up. He was breathing very hard and he was too scared. It was only a bad dream but he was unable to breath. He didn't know for how long he stopped his breath but he was thankful to the guys who woke him up. A guy brought a glass of water near his mouth and he started drinking quickly.

After leaving Rabigh Saeed came to company's dormitory in Jeddah together with Ibrahim. There he met a Yemeni guy Fekri again who was working with him in Rabigh. Fekri was a slim guy, he'd long curly hair and a very thin beard and he was a heavy smoker. He was very slim but he was a hard worker. He used to wear fashion garments and he was careless of what world thinks of him. Anyway he was quite a nice personality. He showed saeed his new room and introduced him to his new roommates. It was a small room full of 5 bunk beds and 7 guys including Fekri. But Fekri was leaving the camp so he gave his place to Ibrahim, and Saeed got another empty bed. So now there were eight guys in the room, one was from Bangladesh and others from Pakistan. Saeed never knew it was because of stress of hard work at site, where there was too hot and a lot of dust all around. Or because of over crowded room where there was a single washroom for 16 guys in two room, that he had this horrible dream.

Chapter 7

Company wasn't supplying drinking water, therefore Saeed had to go out to bring water. Water was quiet expensive there. It is like you get about 2 litters of gasoline, but half liter of water in one riyal. However there were many Saudi Citizens who'd put water coolers outside of their houses as a social work where you can get chilled drinking water anytime you need. Even some guys had put refrigerators outside of their houses where people put their extra food and someone needy can consume that. But for Saeed only water was necessary to take.

One day Saeed was coming back to dormitory after taking the water and a car pulled over beside  him. There were a few young guys sitting in the car laughing and shouting. Saeed knew their intention isn't good so he started walking fast. But the car starting moving behind him. One guy took his head out of the side glass and shouted, " Hey do you need something?" and then all guys started laughing. Saeed couldn't afford a fight with them so he kept moving faster and faster. Then suddenly one guy in the car tried to catch Saeed's arm but he ran fast together with his 20 liters water bottle. Luckily the company's accommodation wasn't too far and he reached home before they could catch him. He got too angry and his face was red with blood. But he saved himself and didn't harm anyone. He felt good after calling his wife back in Philippines using internet usb modem which Suraira gave him. He also had a two years old daughter and he used to forget all the tensions after hearing her sweet little voice.

Which made all of his  dress full of sweat. He was working but his mind was running in the other direction. He was worried about his wife. "Are you ok Jesus?" the guy who was working together with him asked him. "Yes I'm good." Jesus replied. But he wasn't actually good. Last night his sister Jasmine called him and told him that his wife was doing something really bad. He was worried about that. He told his sister to go and check on her tonight.

Back in Manila Philippines, it was midnight when Nicole woke up by the noise of her doorbell, Someone was beating her door too. Nicole got up  hurriedly, she was in deep sleep and she didn't realize what she was doing. She only ran to the door and opened it. Her eyes widened with shock when she saw Jasmine at the gate. She tried to close the door but Jasmine pushed the gate and made her way straight to Nicole's room. There she found that guy she heard about in Nicole's room.

Jesus was laying on his bunk bed. It was a big hall where company had put many beds for workers. Jesus tried to sleep but couldn't he was still thinking about his wife. Chapter 9

Jeddah

A loud bang got everyone's attention. All the workers in the area ran toward the place where noise came from, to see what happened. It was lunch time saeed's team left the work and went to look for their lunch boxes. Saeed thought that he should prepare the material for work after lunch. He removed the fork lift from  underneath the recently installed conveyors and took it toward the materials. He wasn't very far when he heard this loud sound. He left the fork lift where it was and ran back to see it. Everyone was gathered there already. He was shocked to see that his last installation fell on ground from where he just removed the fork lift. Although it wasn't properly secured but he didn't expect it to fall. Luckily there was no one around and it was less high than two meters.

"Guys forget the lunch today we've to make it correct before Sagi returns." Saeed informed his team. Everybody agreed on it because nobody wanted to be yelled on by Sagi. Loud shouting of Sagi scared them more than any falling object. Thus they started to rebuilt the damage, they were fast enough to make everything correct within the lunch hour. Also they've finished their lunch before Sagi returned.

"Saeeeeeeeeeeeed" Sagi shouted loud. He was looking at the same place where it fell down. It was his routine to do his inspection after team finishes the job each place. Saeed ran to him, "yes boss". He was clearly looking worried. He could guess that Sagi already knows what happened there. "Here this support doesn't look straight." Sagi pointed toward the steel support with his mini torch. Saeed took the hammer and hit the support a few times. "Ok now it looks ok. " Sagi frowned and then he left. Everybody started laughing behind him.

Chapter 10

2 o'clock at night a vehicle stopped in front of a building, a tall guy with curly hair came out of the car. He looked around nobody was there probably everybody was sleeping this late. He went inside the building the door was opened. He was careful to take his steps and not to make any sounds. He went inside a hall it was dark so he used his cellphone light to see the way. He stopped in front of the first room in the hall, looked around and turned the door knob the door was opened. He went inside, there were a few guys sleeping on bunk beds. He went near first bed put his hand under the pillow of the sleeping guy and took out a wallet, he put it in his pocket and moved to next guy. Thus he checked every pillow using his phone light and found two wallets. He saw a laptop beside one guy he tried to grab it but the guy moved slightly. So he left the room quickly and silently but he left the door open. After spending ten minutes out he went inside again. This time he grabbed the laptop and started to walk away slowly. But it was hard to pull the laptop because a charging cord was going under the sleeping guy from the laptop. He tried to pull it but the guy woke up. "What are you doing man." the guy who woke up inquired.

Saeed was sleeping deep as usual. But he felt like someone was putting light on his face he moved a bit and light was gone. He slept again, but after a while he felt like someone was pulling his skin. He opened his eyes he saw a guy who was trying to go somewhere using cellphone light. He thought one of his roommate is going for a piss. But he felt he was pulling something from underneath him. What are you doing man" he asked the guy. The guy pulled hard and ran with his laptop. "Alibaba" saeed yelled after he realized that the guy was trying to steel his laptop. The thief panicked by his voice and threw the laptop on the floor with a loud noise and ran away.

All the guys in the room woke up. They were asking saeed about what happed. He told them everything, everybody started to check their stuff in the room except one Pakistani guy who was still in deep sleep. One guy went to him and woke him up" hey we've been robbed here wake up check your stuff." The guy suddenly woke up and ran towards the door, everybody ran behind him. They went outside the dormitory looked everywhere in the street for the thief, there was no one but silence everywhere. After coming back saeed checked his laptop it was working good. Everything was ok in the room except Saeed's wallets and waist bag and Ibrahim's wallets were missing. There were some cash, Iqamas, ID Cards and also Saeed's gold ring was in his wallet. It wasn't big cash and ring was also not much problem but Iqamas and ID Cards were big issue. It was hard to complain and get the new one and also they had to report and pay the fees.

At morning they went to police station to complain. On their way back an arab guy called Saeed and told him that he found his bag on road side and he wants to give him back. Saeed and Ibrahim went to Raheli where that arab guy asked them to meet. They found the guy in front of the mosque, he told them that he saw it beside the road and he found saeed's number in the bag and called him. They thanked the guy and asked him for some refreshment but he said no it was his duty to find the owner. Saeed and Ibrahim's Wallets were inside the bag but all torn up. No money or ring was inside but thankfully iqama and ID cards were there. "Never forget to lock the door before you sleep" Saeed laughed together with Ibrahim.

Chapter 11

"One moz please" saeed asked the guy to give him a banana. It was Ramadan, everyone was fasting. He  woke up at 3:00 in the morning, ate well and started his fast at 4:00. He got a little rest and then went to bus at 5:00 to go to work. Long day was ahead, thankfully work was reduced to 6 hours. There must be no food or water all day. Although food wasn't big problem but he gets very thirsty specially when temperature rises to about 50°C, and he had to do hard work. But he was full of courage inside, he knew he could make it. His believe was strong that he is gonna get rewarded much more than his effort on judgement day.

At 12:00 bus was waiting outside the site. He put some water on his head and washed his face from a plastic water tank. It was about 40 minutes ride back home after reaching home he prayed and slept. Afternoon he got up and at 6:30 he went to mosque. Time of Iftar was on 7:15, after then he could start eating. It was like Saudi people brought everything from their houses for everyone. Though there were many Saudis who stop their vehicle near by you and give you some nice food all year. But in Ramadan it increased. He saw many people giving nicely packed fresh food to anyone passes by at the road. But on reaching the mosque he saw more.

Everyone was sitting in lines in front of the mosque. Though they were sitting on carpets spread on the ground but his Saudi Host asked him with respect to sit there. Steam roasted chicken with rice had been served together with water bottles, fruits, dates, soup, juices and much more. After a few days of eating there those guys started to recognize Saeed and they started to give him his favorite white rice with vegetables. When it was time about to Adhan one of the host asked, "do you need anything else guys." Saeed said " A banana please" and he got one. Right before Adhan a guy brought yogurt on his heavy bike. Then Saeed heard the sound of Adhan and he opened his fast with a date and started drinking water. After prayer of maghrib he wasn't feeling like he was fasting all day, but there were more to come.

Thus Ramadan finished rapidly and Saeed got one week holiday for Eid. He spent his holiday as usual as mostly expats in Saudi Arabia do. Only sleeping, calling home, wishing everyone Eid on Eid day, cooking and eating a lot.

Chapter 12

Manila Philippines

Therefore as Jesus returned to Philippines he went to his home in Manila. It looked empty his wife was gone with most of his precious things. He didn't care about anything else but he was too heart broken because of Nicole. He thought of committing suicide but he wasn't this coward. He wanted revenge, he asked one of his friend that he wants a gun. He wanted to kill his wife and her lover undoubtedly. It was so devastating for him. He stopped respecting woman after that. Every woman is bad he thought to himself. But he never knew then, what the destiny was gonna bring for him.

It was his mom who gave him courage. Her sweet words stopped him for doing anything wrong. "The world isn't over, you're gonna find a better one" she promised him. Time passed by, he took his taxi back from his driver who happened to be his friend also, he was the person who took great care of his taxi when Jesus was in Taiwan. He didn't want to make him jobless but he needed something to keep himself busy in, to get rid of all these bad thoughts. Besides his driver was a very good guy he surely was gonna find same job with someone else. And later some time Jesus called his driver again to drive his sister's taxi.

At Ortigas business district of Metro Manila in SM Megamall a pretty woman was lined up at UV FX Terminal to catch a ride back home. It was rush hour and a lot of sounds and traffic horns were coming to her ear disturbing her. But now she didn't bother much of it, her ears used to it after working long time for an airline ticketing company there. Finally it was her turn, only empty place in the taxi was front seat beside the driver. She hoped on, she saw something, it was driver. She found something interesting about him something very attractive. Same thing was happening with driver, there were many women sit beside him every day but there was something unusual about this girl. Something was pulling him toward her. "Maybe she is the one" he thought to himself. "Uh a lot of traffic, its gonna be a long journey" he tried to start a conversation. She smiled at him, " it is going to work" he thought to himself. Then he started his conversation, he cracked many jokes and made her laugh.

He didn't realized how he has covered most of the distance already. "My name is Jesus, Jesus Fronda Him, by the way" he introduced himself. "Oh I'm Lea, Lea Salongsongan" she replied. "Can i have your number" he requested. She didn't like that, asking him like this her number. She was never gonna give her number like this to a man she just met. She didn't get it why but she gave him her number.

"Hi, have you reached your destination safely" she read the message on her cell phone screen. She knew it that Jesus is gonna contact her. She didn't know why but she felt good about it. "I'm fine." She replied. After that it went on and on. It was like he is messaging her every second. Then he asked her to meet him for dinner and she agreed. After a few meetings they came to know each other very well. She took him to country side to meet her parents. Everybody in the family seemed to like him. Not long after that they got married.

Chapter 13

Jeddah

"Oh my God help me" room echoed with a loud noise at the middle of the night. Saeed suddenly woke up and ran to Ibrahim's bed. "Utol what happened, are you feeling pain again" Saeed asked sympathetically. Ibrahim was putting his hand on his stomach and was trying to press it. He was all rolled over on his bed and he was making loud noises.

It started after Ibrahim came back from work. He was saying that he is feeling pain in his stomach. When pain got worse Saeed took him to nearest hospital in company's provided vehicle. However in the hospital doctor checked him and gave him some pain killers and an Intravenous therapy, and sent him home. Ibrahim was trying to sleep but he was feeling severe pain. He couldn't endure it anymore then he started shouting for help.

Saeed went to his boss room and woke him up. It was good of him that he brought his car out and took Ibrahim in the biggest hospital of the city at Makarona Street together with saeed. He left them at hospital for checkup and came back. Saeed took Ibrahim to emergency department where after some tests doctor found out that he had appendicitis. He needed a surgery, they waited more than an hour before Ibrahim's Medical Insurance Company approved the procedure.

The operation was successful and after a few days in hospital Ibrahim left and went to his cousin's house in Jeddah. Saeed continued to go to his work after first day and about fifteen days later Ibrahim was back to work too. Thus everything was back to normal again. Then Ibrahim called back to his family in Lopon City in Mindanao and informed them what happened to him. He didn't want to make them worried earlier.

Chapter 14

VI Warehouse Jeddah

Saeed opened his arms when a plane passed over him not very high in the air. It was nice weather after rain. It doesn't rain in Jeddah very often. That's why everybody likes to enjoy the rainy weather. Site closed because of the rain and everybody came to warehouse at midday which was nearby the airport, to go back to accommodation. When ready for going home Seed went to the driver, "I'm gonna drive" Saeed announced. "Are you sure you can drive I never saw you driving" driver frowned. "Don'ts worry my friend I used to drive jeepni, and truck full of woods and many other vehicles in Philippines I know It very well." Saeed told him, and he proved It while driving, that he was an excellent driver.

Chapter 15

Manila

Jesus met some Muslim Guys while driving his taxi. They were very nice to him and he became friends with them. He started slowly slowly learning about Islam and clearing his doubts about it. His friends did Dawa to him and called him to Islam. One day he listened to them and that's when his life changed. He felt great about It He went to St.Francis Square Mosque at Ortigas Center and accepted Islam and prayed to God Almighty. His friends gave him a Muslim name and called him Saeed. Its an Arabic name which means "happy". A few months later He got Visa for Saudi Arabia and went there for work and started working at Rabigh and then later at Jeddah Airport.

When he went for Umrah for the first time he was happy for being a Muslim. He felt lucky while rounding around Kaaba at Makkah, wearing same white Ihram like most of the other people. This is where he got comfort of his heart. This is where he found his peace.

God blessed him with a daughter. After about Three years working in Arabia He went back to Philippines where he was very happy to meet his wife and his daughter. His mom came back from Canada. That was very sad moment when he came to know that his mom had cancer. He took really great care of her but one who comes to this world he has to go, soon after that his mom passed away.

Now its been a year since his mom. He has already completed remaining portion of his house. His daughter is very adorable baby. He is driving taxi again but still some companies in Saudi Arabia calling him again and he's plan to go back soon.

Saeed knows how to enjoy the life even when it gives pain. He used to run behind the whirpool of the air to catch it. Eat dates from the trees in the streets of Arabia. Having ice lolly about everyday after work and fully enjoying it. Sleeping in his net hammock in lunch time. And whenever he saw someone wearing new shoes at work he used to put his dusty shoes on it while asking new new, or pinching someone wearing new pants while pretending that he is just checking the fabric and asking new new. Thus he knows how to make fun of small things in life, while making others smile.

End
but not the end.... :)

Lesson Learned

Late night I was sitting in the bus traveling from Lahore to Burhan Motor Way Interchange. Bus was running fast, my thoughts faster than that. My dreams were loaded in the large hold under the bus. I wasn't doing well in jobs so somebody told me I should start a business of my own. Proven to be a bad idea. It hurts when dreams breaks but even more when relations. Brother Shabir helped me to load a bundle of ready made garments on the  bus from Lahore and I started my journey towards my city Hassan Abdal 400km away. No doubt Shabir was a nice guy.
It all started with a phone call of an acquaintance of mine saying that he knows a guy Shabir working in Sahiwal. Who has a job vacancy available in the company he is working for. It happened back in 2011 I was jobless and it was a computer data entry job with the salary of  PKR ten thousand so I said yes. And next day I took a little savings of mine what I had, and left for Sahiwal with a small bag of mine in which i'd put some cloths and essentials for living in the city 600km away from my  home.

So, long story short after reaching Sahiwal in about 7 hours Shabir received me himself and took me to the office. He was a clean shaved slim and tall guy, wearing casual dark brown pants with a same color shirts.  It was a nasty small place with a green carpet on the floor and old painted walls. Paint was coming out on some places on the walls. A desktop P4 computer was placed on the carpet in a corner of the room right beside the old wooden room door. At the side of the monitor an ashtray was placed full with cigarette butts. There was a short fat guy working on the computer, Shabir introduced to me as Shah G. Shah G had great data to enter so he needed someone who could help him all the time.  He told me where and how to enter their data.
Company was already in loss. Company's two young bosses always kept busy at phone and look very tense but I still keep doing my job. Shabir sometimes used to bring me tea or sweets. He was tense himself aswell. After a month the company got bankrupt and I didn't received even single month salary. Shabir came to me he was looking sorry. He said "you should leave for your home now. There is nothing more to do here almost everyone is already gone." He paused, and said "I can do something for you to get your salary, take the hard disk of your computer with you it has some value able data so later I'll try to get your salary with it. So I took the hard disk and put it in my bag but later I didn't feel its right so I returned that to one of the bosses. I asked Shabir that why he isn't leaving, his house was in Lahore about 200 km away from Sahiwal and it was in the way of my city. He said that he hadn't received his salary for months and don't even have enough money to pay bus fare. I said no problem you helped me by looking this job for me, what happened is not your fault. I have brought some money with me when I came here I'll pay for your ticket. He smiled and said "no no I don't feel good about it." But when I insisted he agreed. We left in a rikshaw to the Sahiwal Bus Stop. Shah G too left with us making rikshaw full with his heavy body.

We took bus from Sahiwal Bus Stop for Lahore. After reaching Lahore Shabir said goodbye to us and before he left i'd put PKR 200 in his pocket and asked him to get a taxi. He hugged me he was very emotional and he said " you are my younger brother you helped me a lot. Someday i'm gonna repay you, just stay in touch." We exchanged numbers and he left. Shah G too took his bus for Rawalpindi and I got mine for Hassan Abdal. Shabir called me on reaching home and asked me how it went. After a few days he called again. And he kept calling after every few days. We shared a lot of stories with each other. He told me many things about his family and he said that they are going to shift their house in a few days. After about a month Shabir called me and said "my brother this is the time to replay you. I've a contact in a ready made garments factory. They are gonna sell old fashioned garments in a very low price. You can get a bundle worth PKR 100,000 in just PKR 30,000. Wish I could buy this for you but you know my pocket condition right now. If you can arrange this money you can start your small business and latter you can grow it too far." He said last year he helped his two friends buy these garments and now they are running a great business. I thought its a good deal and when trusted brother was involved so no chance of risk.

But for a person who was living hand to mouth, thirty thousand was a big amount for him. But I didn't want to let go the opportunity this easy. So what I did, I borrowed thirty thousand from a relative of mine and took bus to Lahore. As usual Shabir received me but he said that he is going to Police Station his friend is in some problem. He said he can't go with me to the factory right now but I can join him instead. He introduced me to his friend Sheikh, who was also slim and tall with small beard. Sheikh had contact in garments factory. He was together with Shabir on his motorcycle. So I joined them and we three guys on a single bike left, it wasn't prohibited then. We reached police station and after spending sometime in front ground Sheikh went inside leaving us sitting on grass. When Sheikh came back he told us that their friend has already gone home and the case is solved. Shabir got very happy he was telling me that he has good contacts with police he'd helped many of his friends with their cases. He said that one time a friend of him had a fight with a woman, even his friend was on mistake but he make the woman suffer by his contacts.
We were in a hotel room talking. I'd all the money in my pocket. Shabir showed me his gold ring in his finger. He said you know bro I saved this ring because I was thinking if something bad happen to you I would sell this ring. After leaving Police Station at evening Shabir introduced me to the one of his other friend who was discussing with some guys to send them foreign on work permit. Sheikh left with the motorbike because Shabir said we can't go to Shabir's house which he said is out of the city, or to the factory this late. It was already late night till then, so we booked a room in a hotel. At the counter Shabir took his purse out to pay the bill for the room I stopped him saying i'll pay as it is my business we are going to launch. He smiled and said ok you give him your ID too for the registration purpose as its your business. I smiled back and gave my National Identity Card. After registration we went to our room where Shabir told me about his ring, it was nice of him.
In the morning Sheikh met us in the market he said he is arranging my order but it will be ready at evening we said no problem we will wait. We spend our time in markets after evening Sheikh came with my big bundle in the rikshaw. I opened the bundle inside there were all shiny shirts on the top packet in clear poly plastic bags, I was happy looking at it. Shabir said now you can pay him. I handed the money to Sheikh and Shabir helped me load the bundle to the bus. Bus left the stop after awhile. I was full of thoughts that how greatly this business is going to work.
Bus dropped me at Burhan Interchange. It was early morning there were a very few traffic on the road with no people around. I called a few taxi drivers but no one agreed to come there at that time. Sometime standing there waiting, a 80's model Bedford Van stopped by. Van conductor helped me load my bundle on. They dropped me on Silk Road at Abbottabad Chowk. I loaded my bundle on Qingqi Rikshaw and at last got home.

Shabir told me before that he is gonna help me to get a shop in Islamabad. After a few days I called him and asked him that you forgot about the shop. He asked have you opened your bundle already I said no not yet I was thinking that I'm gonna open it after I get the shop. He said he is gonna come to Islamabad for me tomorrow. Next day I went Islamabad at the place where he told me. There was a big ground at the outskirts of the city, in the middle of the ground an old camp was build. There were a big fuel tank outside the camp and a huge guy with big moustache was sitting outside. I heard Shabir's voice so I went inside the camp Shabir was lying on the carpet together with his another friend he introduced me as Jawad who he told me run a call center. Jawad was wearing a nice shiny dress, he was a healty guy about 25 with a bunch of hair under his chin. Shabir said owner of the this place is also his friend they buy fuel from truck drivers in cheap rates here and then sell it back to petrol pumps or other vehicles. Then he said its time to go, we hired a taxi and went to city. I stop them to pay the taxi fare I told them that you're my guest here and you came all the way for me so whatever we do here I'll pay for it.

We met Mr. Faheem in the city, he was Shabir's acquaintance. Mr. Faheem took us in his car to itwar bazaar to look for a shop. We were rounding half of the day but couldn't find any single shop. Then Mr. Faheem said he is feeling hungry so we went to Rawalpindi Savour Foods and had their special pilaf rice. Food was delicious I never ate at Savour Foods before. After coming out of the restaurant Mr. Faheem said for now we can go but he will keep looking for shop and will inform us as soon as he finds one.
I invited Shabir together with Jawad to spend the night at my place. They agreed so we took a bus to my house. I took them to Khanpur dam in the way, which is a beautiful place to visit. After reaching my house I made arrangements for them to stay for the night. I brought anything possible for them to eat until they said they are gonna burst eating today, everybody laughed at that. At morning they left for lahore, leaving me to think about the shop. I couldn't sell those garments without having a nice shop.

Sheikh called me from Lahore next day asking for some money to borrow. I told him you're like my brother as you're for Shabir but I'm sorry I don't have money to lend you right now. I'd only a few rupees in my pocket then. I called Shabir several times after that asking for the shop. Every time he said wait we are gonna arrange it its our responsibility, but he did nothing about it. After I stopped calling Shabir and started looking place by myself. I found a shop in Lalazar Wah Cantt with the help of one of my former colleague wiki, who also gave me a showcase from his shop to use. The shop I got was already a clothing shop named Tayyab Cloth Store. Owner of the shop Tayyab was a nice guy who gave me place in his shop on a very small rent which I'd to pay after a month. He was a really healthy guy with a big tummy and small curly blonde beard. I took my stuff loaded in a Suzuki Pickup to the shop. I opened my bundle and took a few shirts and pants from top and put them in my showcase and put the sing board Rs. 100 each.

Beside our shop there was Usam's grocery shop. Usam was short with a round face and small mustache. He was always smiling and would make you smile too by telling nice stories. A few of my shirts were already sold so I put some more stuff out of the bundle to display next came a woman she asked me to open a few shirts for her to show I opened a shirt but there was a hole at the back of the shirt so I put it down. I opened other one that two was damaged another one and that was damaged also. The woman said oh not very good stuff so she left. Then I opened my bundle and checked every shirt half of the material was damaged with some no back, some torn, some no collars and many pants with holes. And other material was very old except a few pieces on top of the bundle. I called Shabir right away and informed him what happened. He was sounding upset he said he is going to do something about it. I separated the pieces which were a bit ok and replaced the Rs. 100 sign with Rs. 50 a few more customers came and took some good looking stuff. Also wiki came and took some shirts but he didn't bother to pay anything. Then customers stopped to come so I replaced the Rs. 50 sign with Rs. 25. A few more days spent and a few more pieces sold away.
I took some good looking stuff to special sunday market (Itwar bazaar). All day spent in heat but nothing sold.
I called Shabir again He said pack everything and cargo it to me at the address of Lahore Railway station I'll pick it up from there. Everything remaining which was in a little good condition I gave to Tayyab as rent. Then said goodbye to Usman, packed the rest of the material and took it to Rawalpini Railway Station where cargo service was available.

       Rawalpindi Railway Station

After sending it back I called Shabir he said don't worry now I'll do my best to make it right. A week passed by and no response from him. I called him again asking if he received material yet. He said he has broken his foot and that's why he couldn't go to take it. One more week passed away then I called him again, he said he couldn't go because he wasn't feeling well and he had to take his sister to hospital also. I said last time you told me your foot is broken. He said oh it wasn't broken only misplaced. When next time I called his number was off. I hadn't had money to go Lahore looking for him.
I remembered Shah G and called his number I got at Lahore. After a few rings he picked up and he recognized me after a brief introduction. I told him everything what happened. He said a few weeks ago Shabir called him also asking to do a business together but he said no to him and h'd no more contact with him. He was lucky that he didn't believe Shabir. I could earn only 7000 back from 30,000. It was a big loss for me. It took me one year to return that 30.000. Then I left Pakistan and came to Saudi Arabia...........!

Visit Hassan Abdal

Hassan Abdal is famous as land of springs. There are many places all around the town where water comes out of the land naturally. The good thing is in summer the the water of the springs get very cold but in winter it gets warm. And water is so clear that you can see ground and stones in bottom. It is famous saying there that you can find even a needle dropped in this water. I always feel great whenever I enter the town looking at the highway sign board written حسن ابدال. Its an historic town in district Attock Pakistan.  Karakoram Highway starts from right in the middle of the town. Which is also one of the part of Ancient Silk Road which comes straight from China. Hassan Abdal connects Punjab Province and KPK Province. Its situated at the edge of Punjab.

PunjaSahibIt is said that the town is named after the old saint Baba Abdal ( Bawa Walli Qandhari ). The most famous place in the town is Gurdwara Punja Sahib. It is built on the place where Guru Nanak stayed when he came to Hassan Abdal. Its a sacred place for Sikhs and they visit it from all around the world on April 14 every year to celebrate Vaisakhi. Many Sikhs don't wear shoes while rounding in the markets of the town. Gurdwara is located beside a famous hill where Baba Abdal is believed to be stayed. There is Municipality Water Tank on the hill from where you can have nice view of the building of Gurdwara. In the middle of the building there is a spring coming from under a rock. On the rock there is a hand print which is believed hand print of Guru Nanak. There are many fish in the spring look good gathered in front the rock for fresh water. Locals and Sikhs who come to Hassan Abdal climb on the hill. Stairs were cut through the rocks on the hill to reach the top. Some guys take water canes to the hill top loaded on donkeys for the people to drink.

Furthermore there is Tomb of Lala Rukh beside the hill in front of Gurdwara. A spring flows from the bottom of the hill. There is a water pool full of fish with some in orange color. Many people come to visit the tomb daily. There is similar pool outside the tomb fence used to swim in summer by locals. Tomb is also called Tangi locally.

However Cadet College is located at Peshawar road. Behind the walls of Cadet College there is a spring and a stream which comes from Mughal Gardens Wah. On coming towards the railway station at the railway gate post a streets goes towards Neeli. Where there are two springs and a small stream. There is a small stream and several springs at Bafad Road. Moreover right at entering to Bafad there is a stream called Haro. After KSB Pump Colony there is a stream passes under the Karakoram Highway.

On the other hand while coming from the railway station towards the Peshawar road there is a rainwater pond beside the railway track. In winter fog spreads all over the railway track and make it look beautiful. And in winter night, dew spreads every where making the grass look like covered with a thin snow sheet  in the morning. In winter the temperature goes very low making it too cold and dry and summer it goes too high making it very hot. But monsoon brings a lot of rain every year.

Meanwhile Sewage from domestic, commercial, and industrial sources is polluting streams and destroying springs in the town. Attention is required from national authorities.

Moreover Taxila Museum, Khanpur Dam, Wah Gardens, Tarbela Dam and Kund Park are nearby great places to visit.

Visit Swat

Swat is famous as Switzerland of Pakistan. Its a river valley in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province of  Pakistan in Hindu Kush Range.
So we decided to visit Swat. We live in Hassan Abdal. Its a small city about 50km away from Capital of Pakistan Islamabad, at Peshawar road in Punjab. We packed our bags early morning and family of seventeen, cousins aunties and kids left in a van.

Its about 200 km journey in 4 to 5 hours. We took Karakoram Highway from in front of our house. And went on Peshawar Road. Passing Burhan a small town nearby I could remember a few years back when there were no highway bridge over  the railway track. And every time when train comes a man had to close the gatepost manually to stop the traffic. Which was causing a big traffic jam.

Yeah there were times when train was late or didn't want to move from in front of gatepost so you just had to had wait until gatepost opens again. Thanks for the bridge so no one has to stop and wait now. It was good view while passing from the Ghazi Barotha Canal which  is connected to Indus River and runs a hydro power project.

After Attock Khurd there was an amazing confluence of the Indus River and Kabul River. Two rivers run together but green water of the Indus River doesn't mix with brown water of the Kabul River.

We were keep going along with Kabul river until Nowshera city. There is Kund Park on the way to Nowshera beside the high way. Its an animal theme park and its a good place for family outing. From Nowshera we took Nowshera-Mardan Road to Risalpur. And after passing Risalpur we reached Mardan on the same route. There is Pakistan Locomotive Factory in Risalpur. Where Railway engines (locomotives) are built.

Islamabad-Peshawar Motor Way can also be used from Burhan to Shereen Kotay now. This route wasn't available back then. Everything went silently until we reached Mardan. After Mardan the road was under construction. It was hard for the van to move fast on about 2 km. Then we passed Takht Bhai, which is the place where our Big B Faisal who arranged this trip spent his childhood. On our way back from Swat we visited their old house. Everybody in the family who spent their childhood there was crying with emotion by remembering the childhood memories and the people who were no longer in this wold (RIP) and spent there time in that house together with them. Even some who hadn't been there before, were very emotional and even some were crying too. Takht Bhai is also an archaeological site.

Mountain area and cold breeze with beautiful views started from Dargai Malakand. Although it was hot summer time in our little city so we needed that kind of cold breeze. There was a place where road passed right through the mountain from a tunnel.

All the road went over the hills after that, a curvy mountain road full of great views of nature. After a while we saw Swat River, and kept going along with river on Bahrain Road along with mesmerizing landscapes. We went throw Mingora and reached Madyan. There were many dangerous looking chair lifts used as the transport for local people and also many tiny rope bridges over the river.

After reaching Madyan we got our rooms booked in Rashid Hotel. There was a nice view of Swat River and Madyan Bridg in front of the hotel. But at night it was hard to sleep because of the noise of the fast flowing river. One of our kid cousin ate two prathas a rich fried flatbread before leaving home and he tied two of them along with his seat to eat in the way but in Madyan he was first to say ME on asking who is hurngry. Somebody said you've just eaten two prathas, he said oh come on don't lie. Me and my cousin used to challenge each other to shower with cold water in winter back home. We discussed together that it would be a real challenge if we play that here so first thing we have done in the hotel is to take shower with cold water. But we didn't feel it was a big challenge because water wasn't that cold as we expected it to be. Then later we went to chail stream to have a little swimming. Chail khwar starts from chail and joins up with Swat Rive in Madyan and it is a house of a lot of Trout Fish.

We prayed Jumma prayer in the Mosque right above the fast flowing river, and we ate Pathan special Kabli Plao. After coming back to our hotel me and my cousin decided to go to the top of the building. We took stairs and after reaching the roof I told him that we should go on top of water tank before he answered I was already climbing by the water pipes. Reaching at the top of the tank about 3m high I held the water air vent pipe of the tank to climb on roof top. While my cousin was watching standing on the roof under the tank, right then pipe broke and about 1m pipe length came in my hand. Thankfully there was another pipe similar to that one so I suddenly grabbed that. But unfortunately that pipe broke as well  and came in my hand. I fell straight to the floor on my back together with two pipes in my hand. My cousin was asking are you ok. But I couldn't speak it was hurting badly I couldn't even breath. I collected strength and started walking take huge steps. My cousin got worried but I felt ok after walking for awhile. Then we ran back and didn't tell anyone what happened but we kept secretly laughing at each other.
Next day we left for Kalam passing through Bahrain and several milky water falls. We went along  Swat River all the way until we reached our destination. There were many places where road goes very high from the river. On our way back we stopped on one of that steeps because my cousin was feeling motion sick we got him out of van for fresh air but he started vomiting sitting on the cliff and he was gonna fall in the river from the height right then I held him from his back. After awhile we got back on track when he was feeling a little well.
On reaching kalam first thing we did is to get a room and have rest. At evening we went to market walking throw the Suspension Bridge. That bridge sways even when people walk on it but cars run over it as well and its strong enough for that. Market is full of jewelry and antiques. No refrigerator needed for the cold drinks they keep them dipped in icy flowing river. Blocks of ice comes floating in the river. There were many traditional woven beds lying right in the middle of the river. Where you can sit have coffee or your meal. There was asphalt like substance at the entrance of every second shop in a pot to sell. That was actually shilajit (salajit) which comes from mountain crevasses which is rich in nutrients and minerals. They use it in many herbal medicines. There was a mosque where fresh stream water was always falling in the bathrooms. So me and my cousin challenged each other here too, and showered in cold water. But that was really cold, hitting our head hard while taking shower. It was really hard to shower in there but we both enjoyed it.
When we were in Madyan we went around the mountain walking at afternoon. When we reached a gap between the mountains some people told us that river water flows this way at evening and fills the gap so we ran leaving the place before evening. If you happen to go there make sure you don't get trapped in one of that places where water can come anytime with full force. And always walk in groups maybe local youngsters don't behave very well towards the tourists.

We were large family with kids together with us that's why we couldn't visit many great places. But what we saw was wonderful. Kalam was most amazing place I've ever seen.
